Martha Forrest Scholarship Endowment Established

“I have known Martha for years. What I appreciate so much about her is that what you see is what you get. She is absolutely genuine. She is plain-spoken, warm, funny – a mainline woman of God.”

The Reverend Martha Forrest and the United Methodist Church have a long history together. As a seventh-generation Methodist, and the daughter of a Methodist pastor, Martha grew up in the Methodist Church parsonages. “My dad’s family was plainspoken and outgoing; they laughed a lot and loved God. I look and act like them”, she says with a smile. Martha heard the call to preach as a child, and entered Candler in 1974. ”Ordination did not seem to be an option for me, because I was a girl”, she recalls. ”I found out that God makes things possible when you are willing to follow His direction…” Martha has lived that legacy in her career as a pastor for over 25 years.

Martha’s husband of 51 years, Bob Forrest, is also a lifetime Methodist. Early in their marriage, they moved frequently with their three children, Rob, Suzanne, and Steve. They would join the closest Methodist church on the first Sunday in each new town. Each new home had it's surprises and challenges, but the Forrest family always remained dedicated to their call.

Martha is known by her peers as authentic, straightforward, and creative leader who has not been afraid to confront the hard issues, such as race and finance. Martha willingly has gone into the trenches as a trusted pastor to many types of people – both Bible and Disciple based. She served churches in North Georgia as a pastor for 20 years, retiring in 2006 as the District Superintendent of Atlanta-College Park District in the North Georgia Conference. Martha was unanimously endorsed by the North Georgia delegation as the nominee for Bishop in 2000.

Her continued life and ongoing legacy are being celebrated through the establishment of the Martha Forrest Scholarship Endowment. This gift will give future college students the opportunity at scholarship support through their higher education. The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation will be facilitating the scholarships. If you would like to donate to the Martha Forrest Scholarship Endowment fund click here.
