The Stanley S. Kresge Award encourages support for UM-related educational institutions by recognizing those who work unselfishly on their behalf. Mr. Kresge was a dedicated member of Metropolitan UMC in Detroit, Michigan, who gave freely of his time and personal resources to many UM-related schools, colleges, universities, and theological schools. Born in Detroit, he graduated from Albion College. In 1923 he married Dorothy E. McVittie and began a fifty-three year career with the S. S. Kresge Company. He had many interests during his life, but his tremendous dedication to The UMC and unselfish giving to UM-related education was memorable.
The award is presented annually to an active volunteer in a UM-related institution. The recipient receives a medallion and a certificate of recognition. A $20,000 scholarship endowment is established in the recipient's name for students attending the nominating institution.
Recommendations may be made by (1) the CEO of any UM-related school, college, university, or theological school, or (2) UMC bishops. All nominations must be submitted in writing and received by January 30. Nomination letters should clearly describe how the nominee exemplifies the two characteristics of Stanley S. Kresge's life — dedicated membership in The UMC and unselfish giving to UM-related education. A one-page biographical resume should also be included. Nomination form may be downloaded by clicking here.
